Town of Simsbury Press Release

Community Farm of Simsbury Agriculture Viability Grant

The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has approved the Community Farm of Simsbury’s (CFS) proposal for funding through the 2009 Agriculture Viability Grant.  The $49,999 Grant, which aims to strengthen the economic well being of Connecticut’s farms, will enable CFS to make better use of town land originally donated in 1883.  The Grant will be used for three primary purposes:  to improve existing infrastructure, initiate educational programs for local children and launch an “Incubator Farmer Program”.

In order to facilitate CFS’s educational endeavors, funds will be allotted towards creating an environment for educational activities in two of the town’s barns.  These improvements will allow for educational programs, geared for children from pre-school to high school, which aim to inspire and educate future generations about the importance of Connecticut’s farms.  “CFS will utilize the latest in hands-on teaching techniques with an emphasis on math, science, literature and the arts”, said Tim Goodwin, Executive Director of the Community Farm.  Furthermore, the “Incubator Farmer Program” will provide quality farmland and training to aspiring farmers over a three year period with the hope of bringing younger farmers into Connecticut’s aging farmer population.  These three goals will begin to come to fruition in early to mid 2010.
